Principal's Message
From The Principal: Miyoshi Bates-Knox
WELCOME TO Year 5!
I am so excited about this school year. This is year five of our turnaround efforts! We have grown so much since day one fall of 2012. Our attendance remains strong and our growth towards college readiness is steady. Our students and staff are positioned to experience a successful year of achievement! This is the year of refining our procedures, structures, strategies, and instructional practices. Due to this refinement year, we believe that our efforts will produce double growth. Join me in declaring…..Here’s to a great year!!Let’s do this!

Our History
Building on Our History to
Create a Culture of Excellence
Stagg School of Excellence is named in honor of Amos Alonzo Stagg (1862-1965). Stagg was the University of Chicago football coach for 41 years. His teams compiled a record of 268 victories and 141 losses. After retiring from the University of Chicago at age 70, he coached at College of the Pacific, Stockton, California, until 1946. He served as co-coach of Susquehanna University, Selins Grove, Pennsylvania, from 1947 to 1952, and as advisory coach at College of the Pacific until 1959.
Stagg School of Excellence opened in December of 1966. The original building contained 28 classrooms, a lunchroom, and an assembly hall/gymnasium. The school was built on the site of the old Shewbridge athletic field, which was formerly owned by Leo High School. Stagg relieved overcrowding, as well as created an upper grade center for 7th and 8th graders from surrounding schools.
The athletic field, now known as the Stagg Stadium, hosts Chicago Public School district athletic events. It was completely renovated between 1998-2000, equipped with a new track, bleachers, press box, locker room facilities, concession area, and storage utility garage.
A new play lot was installed in 2001, and the building was later renovated in 2012. Today’s three-story building contains 36 classrooms, a lunchroom, gymnasium, and assembly hall, and serves 540 students.
AUSL (Academy for Urban School Leadership) is a Chicago nonprofit school management organization that creates schools of excellence by developing highly effective teachers and transforming educational outcomes for students in the lowest performing schools.
Chicago Public Schools (CPS) turned over management of Stagg School of Excellence to AUSL in 2012 as a turnaround school. Turning around a school is one approach that CPS uses to improve neighborhood schools that have been failing for many years. The transformation begins with the new leadership and teachers in the building to deliver effective instruction and the right climate and culture to the same neighborhood students.
AUSL is committed to to providing all AUSL students with a quality education to prepare them for college and career.
